Myofascial Release

Fascia is a fibrous, connective tissue located just below the skin. It wraps and connects the muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels of the body. Collagen fibers within fascia affect both blood flow to muscles as well as lymphatic fluid flow. Together, muscle and fascia make up what is called the myofascial system.

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe and effective hands-on technique that involves applying sustained pressure on the soft tissues while applying traction to the fascia. This technique results in softening and lengthening (release) of the fascia, as well as the breaking down of scar tissue or adhesions between skin, muscles and bones.  As the fascia and surrounding tissue releases, other contiguous structures can then move more freely, and restricted motion is restored.  Benefits many have experienced through Myofascial Release therapy include:

  • Reduction in muscle spasms
  • Improved joint movement and flexibility
  • Increased range of motion
  • Decreased muscle and fascial tension
  • Improved breathing
  • Reduction in chronic recurring injuries
  • Improved posture
  • Reduced stress and fatigue
  • Behavioral improvements

Myofascial Release is suitable for both adult and pediatric patients.  Wear loose-fitting clothes such as shorts for your appointment to provide for ease of movement.  As with all bodywork, we recommend you drink plenty of water both before and after your MFR session.
